Packing Light and Flying High: Q&A w/ J. Reed

J. Reed the up and comer out of our beloved city, is an artist who caught my ear with the first song I heard from him called "Spilling Liquor". March of last year he dropped off a mixtape called "The Root of Evil", which held 12 tracks. He returns with new music being featured the Chi-City Hip Hop "ForeverChi" mixtape and dropping off a new single "Rollie On My Arm", that will be on his upcoming project "Pack Light, Fly High" set to be release later this month of April.

Your last project was released last year of March, what have you been doing since then?

Grinding, man. Out here in the world getting my hands dirty. When The Root of Evil dropped I was basically doing everything on my own and it wasn't really working out. I was spreading myself too thin. So I regrouped, found proper representation and brought a few more people into the fold to take some of the load off. Then we repackaged the project and hit the streets on some Master P shit. Just trying to build up a fanbase. One person at a time.

Hip Hop is a genre where fans tend to have ADD when they don't hear from an artist. Do you have any worries about losing audience after no project release for so long?

Absolutely, especially being a new artist. But I'm a perfectionist. I like to take my time and make sure everything is up to par and to my liking before I present it to the world. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Plus there were a lot of things behind-the-scenes that I needed to take care of before I could move how I wanted to move. Now that all of that is situated you can definitely expect to hear from me on a more consistent basis from now on.

"Pack Light, Fly High" can be interpreted as a person who always on the go. What is your interpretation and where did the name come from?

It's actually a personal mantra of mine. Something I came up with a while ago. It can mean a lot of different things to different people. All depends on how you choose to apply it. There's really no right or wrong answer. But to me it represents letting go of baggage or anything that's holding you down and preventing you from accomplishing the things that you want to accomplish.

Brown Man Beats handles all of the production, how did this collaboration come about and how was it working with him?

He did a bulk of the production on my last project and I just fell in love with his sound. I felt like musically we were a perfect match. So instead of going out and working with a gang of different producers we could just build on the foundation that we already laid.

What can we expect from this EP on the 23rd?

A well put together re-introduction to who I am as an artist.

For anyone new unfamiliar with your music,  what are some things you want them to know about you?

That I take my craft very seriously. I'm not here to make a quick buck. I just really love making music, man. Nothing compares to that feeling I get when I'm in the studio creating. So if someone takes time out of their day to check out what I have going on I'm going to try my hardest to make sure that they aren't disappointed.
