Pick Three: January - EP, Video, & A Single

Kicking off this year's Pick Three editorial. Today Chi-City Hip Hop brings you the end of the month segment which is the first of the year. This is an opinion segment, where a writer picks three post, from the current month, that stood out to them or that's been added to a playlist and have it on repeat and simple stood out against others. I don't like long lists so we're just picking three, no honorable mentions, its that simple.

In no particular order, each month's post will hold three singles, sometimes all mixtapes, maybe all videos, or two singles and mixtape, etc etc. There were definitely a lot of great releases this month, making choices difficult, but I got my three what's yours.

Check it out below and let me know your three.

Tree - The @MCTreeG EP (EP)
Building on the local success of Sunday School, then reaching even farther with part 2, what could be better than getting a new project from Tree in the beginning of the year. Having given the people singles like "Probably Nu It" which we get Tree singing more than rapping, with the feeling of a Blues singer giving us the story of sexual encounters with one who's in a relationship and not giving a fuck. Then the storylines of  "Like Whoa", another single release, that was another one that will get your head moving. I was looking forward to hearing what this Scion presented project had to offer.

Though this was the clean version, and love I curse a fucking lot, this wasn't enough to deter my rap ears from enjoying the EP. The elements of his SoulTrap sound, sounded the strongest on the likes of "Soultrappin", a love song of such on "Uh Million", and a great record to end it with, "God Like". The fact of handling production on this project as well, shows this is one hundred percent Tree, providing enjoyable music that doesn't feel to stick to the mechanics of his latest project.

MoBo - FuckThePublic (Video)
Relatively new our my radar, the young up and comer caught my ear when I stumbled across the song called "FuckThePublic". After missing some of her other releases, of my own fault, she brought to world the video for the single. Directed by Visual Mecca, the video depicts a MoBo attempting to show the world what she has to offer with no avail. From a job interview to spitting, because impression of image she's turn down, with a steady grind and chance encounter, cameo by St. Millie, makes some leeway for that next step. This is a great example of a visual improving on a single, as the song leans on frustrations and the video shows a clip of [why] the frustration. Dropping this video on the first day of January, this was a perfect introduction, putting a face to the rhymes before the public gets it twisted.

Benjamin Earl Turner ft. Saba - West
What else could you do, but start moving when the beat drops for this one. West coast spitter Benjamin Earl Turner and Chicago's Saba team up to represent their respective sides on a track called "West". The two dedicated this one to what raised them as Saba also handled the production, with such a dope beat, both artist could have been overshadowed but floated over it. Benjamin Earl Turner kicks it off, catching my ears within the first 28 seconds of the song and continues on to bring fire. Saba follows with a flow that fits and takes advantage of the bass that kicks, ending it with "Westside raised me I should get that shit tatted".
